Pupil Premium

Pupil premium

At Elton Primary School, we recognise that children face many barriers to their learning. It is part of our ethos to ensure that these are effectively and efficiently removed so that all children make good progress. An integral part of this work surrounds the use of our pupil premium money which is given by the government to support the education of children based on several factors. The main criteria (and the ones which currently apply to Elton Primary) are eligibility for free school meals (FSM) and Looked After Children (LAC). There is no set guidance on the way in which this funding should be allocated. It is up to individual schools to determine their own priorities.

Pupil Premium Funding

These funds were used in a variety of ways to provide additional support and intervention for all pupils, but with a particular focus on those in receipt of 'Free School Meals' (FSM) and 'Looked After Children (LAC). A key area where these funds were targeted was to ensure the continued progress and academic achievement for these vulnerable groups.

Important Information

If your child does not have Free School Meals, but may be eligible because of your family's income level, please contact the school office (in confidence). Even if you do not wish to have the free meals, this would mean that the school could still claim Pupil Premium Funding that may be used to help your child.  There is also an allocation for children who are in care, adopted from care or members of 'service' families.

Intent

At Elton Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every child, irrespective of their background or circumstances, has the opportunity to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Our Pupil Premium strategy is designed to address the barriers faced by disadvantaged pupils and to ensure they receive high-quality education, resulting in improved outcomes.

Our primary intentions are as follows:

  1. Closing the Attainment Gap: We aim for disadvantaged pupils to achieve at least in line with their peers nationally. This involves targeted interventions and support tailored to individual needs.
  2. Emotional and Social Well-being: We recognise that emotional well-being is crucial for academic success; therefore, we intend to provide holistic support, including counselling services and social skills development.
  3. Parental Engagement: We intend to foster strong partnerships with the families of our disadvantaged pupils, encouraging their active participation in their children's education through workshops and resources.
  4. Cultural Capital: We believe in enriching the life experiences of our pupils. Our strategy includes access to cultural and extracurricular activities to enhance their learning experiences and broaden their horizons.

Implementation

To realise our intentions, we have developed a robust implementation framework that is consistently reviewed and adapted based on data analysis and feedback. Key components of our strategy include:

  1. Targeted Interventions:
    • We employ experienced teachers and teaching assistants to provide small-group and one-to-one interventions in literacy and numeracy for disadvantaged pupils.
    • Utilising evidence-based programmes (e.g., Number Sense, Ready Steady Spell/Write and Read Write Inc.) to enhance core subject mastery.
  2. Professional Development:
    • We invest in ongoing professional development for staff, focusing on effective strategies for supporting disadvantaged pupils, including trauma-informed practices and adaptive instruction.
    • Peer observation and coaching sessions are facilitated to promote best practices across the school.
  3. Emotional Support Services:
    • Established partnerships with external agencies to provide access to counselling services, mentoring, and emotional resilience training.
    • Implementation of wellbeing programmes such as the “Emotional Friendly Schools and My Happy Mind” to support our pupils' social and emotional development.
  4. Parental Engagement Strategies:
    • Regular workshops for parents to equip them with strategies to support learning at home. Topics include Meet the Teacher, Stay and Read, Early Help support, Breakfast Mornings, SEND drop ins, and Tea and Talk.
  5. Enrichment Activities:
    • Providing support for trips, extracurricular clubs, and access to cultural experiences to enhance pupils’ engagement and learning.
    • Collaboration with local institutions to facilitate STEM workshops, performances, and exhibitions that enrich the curriculum.

Impact

The impact of our Pupil Premium strategy is closely monitored. We anticipate the following outcomes:

  1. Improved Academic Attainment
  2. Enhanced Well-being and Attendance
  3. Increased Parental Engagement
  4. Broader Cultural Exposure

By implementing this comprehensive Pupil Premium strategy, Elton Primary School is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where every child is empowered to achieve their full potential, reflected in our commitment to Ofsted's standards and best practices for outstanding education.
