Phonics

Phonics is taught daily to Foundation Stage and Key Stage One pupils. This year, we have started to use Read Write Inc. which is a pacey scheme designed to move children forward in their reading skills quickly.

Children in Year One and Two are grouped according to which stage they are at and also practise letter formation, comprehension and sentence structure. Children who didn’t achieve the Key Stage One phonics screening mark, who are now in Year Three, are receiving daily catch up phonic sessions to ensure there are no gaps in their phonological awareness.

Older children throughout school, who still find difficulty with phonics and reading, are receiving daily support using either Read Write Inc. 1:1 tutoring or the computer software program ‘Nessy Learning’.
